Two weeks ago, I was transferred to a medium-security sex-offender facility, supposedly because of its “low violence” reputation. In reality, that reputation conflicts with what actually happens when you confine 1,000 of Arizona’s most hardened offenders.

Each unit here has dedicated “HEADS” who control sections of the prison and report up the chain to the racial leaders. In prison, everything about an inmate like me is judged by race, the crime you were convicted of, and how you carry yourself.

Almost every inmate has tattoos telling their life story — correctional officers do too. Many white inmates are missing teeth from meth use. I don’t have that problem, even though I went seven years in Maricopa County Jail without a toothbrush or toothpaste. I’ve never used illegal drugs, and only drank alcohol once at age 18. On the outside, I occasionally enjoyed champagne with fresh orange juice at Sunday brunch, alongside eggs Benedict.

I wrote my friend Harland Embree that correctional officers were “setting me up” for past violent offenses and using tactics that are beyond belief. Now, at Cook Unit — and looking back, Aspen Unit too — inmates are being spoon-fed information about crimes the FBI and other states suspect me in, including murders tied to organized crime.

There are always informants. Watch Dateline and you’ll see the same thing: a jailhouse rat. Here, the “heads” approve who gets to inform on whom. That snitch gets a reduced sentence, and later, once they’re free, they write back claiming they lied — giving the inmate they informed on a chance at a new trial. It’s almost guaranteed. Everyone eventually goes home, but it’s a long merry-go-round.

What’s shocking is how much detail about me — my life history, and even suspected crimes — gets passed around by other inmates. All of it comes from the prison’s Criminal Investigative Unit (CIU) and the prosecutor’s office. In fact, the people I informed on actually did computer support for the New Jersey State Police, tied in with New York’s counterterrorism systems, and Camden Police. I warned Special Agent Taylor Hannah about this, but he disregarded it and put people at risk.

So now I just say it outright, to protect myself and expose the FBI for what they are: an agency that doesn’t care about criminals who’ve reformed. They’ll trample constitutional rights to build cases and get convictions at any cost. And unless you have money and power, you’ll never get a lawful review. Defendants without those connections rarely see justice.

Sometimes I wish I had just become a lobsterman in Maine, living on an island. I love the misty, salty air of a coastal inlet, or a rustic town by Moosehead Lake. I also lived for years on Longboat Key, Florida, but I doubt I could ever return — not just because of my record, but because it costs millions and I’m broke. Half Moon Bay, California, is beautiful. So is Sag Harbor, New York. Maybe someday I’ll find someone willing to rent me a room.

For now, I’ve got the chance to get in shape and lose 70 pounds in six months. I’m walking an hour daily around the track, and I’ll keep increasing it.

Because of my history with officers at Browning Unit, Sgt. Longo told me I’m not allowed to talk to female officers — especially Hispanic women — because administration thinks I’ll attack them. They claim I’m “dangerous around women.” That’s absurd. Two years ago, a Hispanic female officer actually proposed marriage to me. At Browning, I had good relationships with female officers.

One officer, C/O Gisgand, even got written up because she was friendly with me. She was transferred after a sergeant claimed our relationship was “unbecoming.” She also once told me that Homeland Security had invoked the Patriot Act, and that officers were being grilled about me by law enforcement out of Nevada — with a Black judge I assumed was Michael Douglas, also from Nevada.

Anyway, these orders against me speaking to women will backfire. Psychology here has no clue what I’m really saying.
