Recently, I was asked by the news media to reflect on my inmate peer group, the interpersonal relationships I maintain with this subculture, and how I will develop outward behaviors that will lead to my successful return to society. The demographics of prisoners that are spaced throughout the United States to include the beliefs and behaviors are widely diverse. What is a common belief system of prisoners in one area is not held in another. First, my observation of other inmates and the impressions that may have influenced me concerning their behavior style of communication and just interaction among people in general are personally skewed. Unfortunately, the most salient feature of most of the prisoners is the negative grouping of them of all ages...mostly young people ( age 18-35) are influenced by antisocial and/or sociopathic inmates ( aged 40-65) that do form extreme violent behaviors of these inmates that perpetuates criminal activities to include illegal drug activity and male prostitution. Surprisingly, a notable feature of racial organization is that black males in prison who appear less organized and violent are indeed well structured and organized with other older black inmates who attempt to create an impression of religious brotherly love that excludes other races...basically, blacks are taught to be somewhat prejudice and self reliant and be independent of anything a white man creates. However, my experience with the typical white American male inmate that has been incarcerated in America has been distorted because their behavioural dynamics are so different depending on the region of the United States a white prisoner is imprisoned. The state of Maine does not incarcerate Nazi gang members. Whereas, the state of California or probably the West coast is infected with the violet prison lifestyle of Hispanic created gangs that now influence people living in many Western state communities. That's not to say that Hispanic inmates are the only influential game players with gang politics, recruitment, and ways to make large illegal monetary gains. Everyday my mind is blown away with the criminal ingenuity of white, native American, Asian, Hispanic, and black gangs. They have incredible influence around the world around them. Unfortunately, these underworld individuals, for the most part, will always find themselves in trouble, in prison, or always looking over their shoulder in fear and maybe dead. Most of these people are only respected by like minded criminals. Currently, I am locked-up at a sexual offender unit for my safety impart due to the lower violence compared to general population. I am aware that 1/2 of these inmates have a better chance of less recidivism than a person convicted of a nonsexual crime . About 1/3 of this prison does not have a sexual based crime or history. Most of these inmates will never experience life as a young man again in their community. Most of these inmates wish they had changed as young teenagers, but they don't think they could have changed due to many factors including genetics, family life, and environment... some want to change but state, "It's to late for me" and "I really can't influence a young person to not be a criminal... I never listened...", stating that with a tear in their eye or blank stare. Most inmates have given up on hope and believe that a life in prison is all they have to look forward to because society has no place for them, won't accept them, or they really find that there are to many obstacles for an inmate to be successful especially if they have few friends and family. A prisoner usually finds quality friends or homosexual lovers in prison that sustains their social needs. Inmates usually find a social support group whether it be negative (usually that's what inmates gravitate towards). Some inmates learn that they must follow established prison rules that are few to be successful and if they can't do this then how can they follow the complex rules of their community and society? I will speak from experience. When I was released from federal prison and attempting to secure a good job, get accepted to a good university, and adjust to a normal relationship with my long-term wealthy fiancé who eventually rejected me because of my mental illness and criminal record. Needless to say, I wanted to obtain a successful life mostly gauged by what others thought of me and how they set an unreasonable bar for me to reach. Truly, most of my friends and associates did not know how difficult it was for me to maintain a normal life with a felony conviction. I could not maintain a steady job, I could not find a university to accept me, and other social/professional impediments a felony conviction creates. Statistics, less than 3% of white men have a felony conviction or are on probation. About 28% for black men and 40% for Hispanic men have felony and probation records. Indeed, after being rejected by society, I married and placed everything in my wife's maiden name except the offshore holding corporation that was in my name with a resident agent. Again, I am intimidated by the criminal lifestyle of the common inmate to include the vulgar tattoos, arcane language and gestures inmates use to communicate with each other and abusive behavior that identifies an inmate in a social hierarchy. Unfortunately, most inmates do not care about themselves or others. Lately, I have been getting furious, because there are lots of halfway homes, group homes, and self-help centers that don't give a damn about prisoners and are only after charging insurance companies money paid for by taxpayers. These programs are suppose to help prisoners reintegrate back into their community and not just cheat everyone by making the owners of these groups wealthy. The government should set up assistant programs to keep felons out of prison...not send people back to prison to secure jobs for officers and small prison towns.
